How to treat squirrels with squirrelpox?
If you receive a squirrel with Squirrelpox isolate the individual from other squirrels. Use nitrile gloves and wash hands thoroughly after handling. All instruments, implements, food bowls cages etc must be disinfected with Sodium hypochloride (bleach) for 30 minutes or approved veterinary disinfectant.

How many French catheters do squirrels need?
Depending on the size of the squirrel, a 3 1⁄2 French catheter can be used for very. small babies and a 5 French catheter can be used for larger squirrels. Hold the tip of the catheter at the. base of the rib cage and gently stretch it along the animal’s chest, neck and head to the tip of its nose.

Squirrels can become infected with this deadly disease from exposure to felines; cats#N#or bobcats. Fecal matter of felines often contains the microscopic eggs of the toxoplasmosis parasite.#N#These eggs are viable for extended periods of time (months) in the environment, and normal methods#N#of disinfecting do not kill the eggs. If a bobcat (or house cat) has been housed in a cage built with any#N#wood framing the base or sides, the eggs can infect the wood; and even pure bleach, ammonia, or other#N#disinfectants will not kill them. All infected wood and soil from a contaminated cage must be#N#removed and replaced prior to using the cage to house other types of animals. The squirrels can be exposed to toxoplasmosis and#N#also lose their fear of cats which can have fatal results when the squirrels are released.#N#Symptoms: Unfortunately, the symptoms often appear when the animal is near death. Well fleshed,#N#apparently healthy individuals will exhibit heavier than normal breathing and a lack of appetite 24-48#N#hours prior to death.#N#Treatment: There is no treatment. The microscopic larvae invade the entire body, especially the soft#N#tissue organs making removal impossible. Mortality rate in squirrels can be 100%. The disease can be#N#spread to humans by house cats but not by infected squirrels as they are a secondary host and do not#N#shed eggs.#N#West Nile Virus: This newly arrived virus is transmitted by insect vectors (mosquitoes) and affects#N#many species of animals including humans. What is a hotline volunteer?
Hotline Volunteers monitor ARC’s wildlife hotline and act as a liaison between our wildlife rehabilitators and the general public. During a shift, volunteers provide callers with basic information regarding emergency care, advice on reuniting, and assisting with many other wildlife issues. If an animal requires rehabilitation, volunteers also assist in locating a wildlife rehabilitator for the caller. Hotline shifts are available Monday-Sunday. Shifts run from 9am-1pm, 1pm-5pm, and 5pm-9pm.
What is ARC in wildlife?
ARC provides its members ongoing educational opportunities, basic rehab supplies, and a network of seasoned rehabilitators to provide support in wildlife care. Members are expected to provide 8 hours of monthly hotline coverage as well as maintain state licensing requirements and annual ARC membership dues.
