Hi , I'm wondering why the pipes and conduit need to be removed its not uncommon to leave the old stuff in the wall/ceiling it will not hurt anything if they stay there, 2" thick plaster is pretty thick if you can excess it from the top ie attic knock it down from there, much easier and less exposure to the dust.

I've thought about trying to leave this plaster in place for 5 years, this year I decided it has to go, my reasons are many. 1. When the building was built, the interior walls went up first, then the ceilings were plastered. When the PO gutted (complete removal) the interior walls it left 4 inch wide openings through out the ceiling.2.

In a former life i worked as a laborer on a construction crew and we ripped down a whole lot of that stuff. We would smash up the plaster between the joists with a sledge hammer and then cut the wire mesh with tin snips until we could get a pry bar behind it - then one guy would pull the loose edge while the other guy pried against the weire mesh.

You need to get an edge started and work from there. A lot of the old wire lath I have dealt with has a relatively poor tensile strength, enough that prying the mortar will cause it to fail, letting a slab fall free. Maybe score lines every 2 feet with a diamond-bladed angle grinder to give it a place to hinge.
