acid rot isnt contagious from one skin to another but most spots will grow on the same skin - acid rot is caused because the skin (when tanned) was not fully neutralized and the acid (in tanning bath) just keeps on working - albeit (i always wanted to use that word) slowly - probably nothing you can do with existing skins

It's caused by acid in the skin, both from tanning and from naturally occurring amino acid salts that are in the skin. Well oiled skins are less susceptible. Canid (fox, coyote, wolf) and other carnivore skins seem to have more problems than herbivore skins from the amino acid decay.

Good replies. Without seeing the hangers, I would lean more toward grease burn than acid rot. It is more common in furbearers and occurs in patchy areas whereas acid rot will tend to affect the entire hide from submersion in an improperly prepared acid pickle. Either way, it is not reversible.
