How does a soldering Wick work?

Feb 04, 2020 · Hi This is a iPhone 6 CPU and the IC has some greyed out pads. How can i restore those pads that are too grey? In this state the solder won't suck on. - Flux and some tin do not do the trick - Solder wick and heat also don't do the trick - Isopropyl won't help either I really don't want to scratch away this "layer"

What is solder wick or desoldering braid?

Mar 14, 2010 · Feb 27, 2010. #2. If the solder wick is oxidized it will not want to wick. A bit of fresh solder on the joint will provide a bit of flux to help the solder wick. Liquid flux is even better. I have no experience with lead free solder. Essick V_R_30RE Vibratory Roller Blog.

Why won't my solder look like New?

Using a desolder pump can be cumbersome with both hands full and make the task a little difficult, but also doesn’t remove the unwanted solder as efficiently as the wick does when used properly. To use solder wick, simply place the end of the wick over the solder you want to remove and then place your heated solder tip over it.

Can you use a desolder pump to remove solder?

Copper chemically bonds with solder. If it isn't, the solder isn't melted (as you suggest). Try tinning your tip, and reheating the braid with flux to make sure the copper isn't coated with something weird. 30W is a pretty low heat-generating iron, so it might take a while to get up to temp (though 4-5 seconds should be plenty).

How to remove solder wick from joint?

Remove the solder wick from the joint and return the soldering iron to its holder after the wick is fully coated with the solder you removed. The next step is to cut the length of the used solder wick from the roll. After you’ve cut the wick, check for other solder joints that need to be desoldered and repeat the procedure.

What is solder wick?

Knowing how to use a solder wick, which is braided copper wire that allows you to remove solder from joints you need to alter, is important if you work on electronics. Solder wick is especially useful if you need to remove solder from a circuit board or components.

How long does it take for a soldering iron to heat up?

Most soldering irons take at least three minutes to fully heat up.

Does soldering iron melt?

The heat from the soldering iron will melt the solder and, as it begins to melt, the copper wiring of the solder wick will absorb the solder (capillary action). As the solder cools it will bind to the solder wick.
