You do NOT have to wait until your first follow up–typically 6 weeks–before you can start doing some exercise. These exercises are so gentle and so appropriate for the newly postpartum mama. You may even find them to be so beneficial that you continue to do them past the immediate postpartum phase!
Why do you need pelvic floor rehabilitation and abdominal rehabilitation?

While the courses generally start about 6 weeks after giving birth, some women choose to start a bit later, especially if they had complicated labors, or C-sections.
How can you prepare for a smoother recovery after birth?
Jan 23, 2020 · The way I view it, the body undergoes a lot of changes over the course of ~40 weeks, so I would expect the body to take more than 6 weeks to recover, especially when the person “recovering” is caring for a newborn. As far as the tissues impacted by childbirth, the pelvic floor muscles stretch a significant amount during delivery.
How long does it take for a baby to recover from a pelvic floor injury?
In fact, two people may have the same exact delivery, but one person will feel fully recovered after 6 weeks, and another may not feel recovered for 8 months. Everyone is different and heals at a different pace.

Keep in mind a c-section is major surgery and can take six weeks or more to heal internally. Scar tissue from the c-section can be painful, and sometimes nerves near the scar may get irritated and lead to pain that radiates down the leg or into the labia.

What is pelvic floor physical therapy?
A urogynecologist or a pelvic floor physical therapist (PT) can evaluate these muscles and determine whether they're contributing to your symptoms. If they are, the PT can work to release trigger points – areas where the tissues are stuck together rather than sliding easily against each other.
Why do women do kegels?

How long does it take for abs to come back together?
If you are newly postpartum, you are going to have ab separation. Obviously, your muscles need time to come back together. As in months. Depending on your genetics, your abs may come back together rather quickly on their own. If this isn’t your first pregnancy, your abs will be even more stretched and loosened. I don’t recommend “testing” yourself for Diastasis Recti right away after baby because of course your abs are going to be separated. This condition is when it has been around 9 months to a year, and there is still a large gap. Following my simple plan will help prevent this from happening, and heal your tummy if you are farther along in your postpartum healing.
Why are my abs weak?
If you weren’t active before pregnancy, or during , this can be a cause of even weaker ab muscles. If your abs aren’t actively engaged through exercise, walking and standing much before you are pregnant, then they are going to be even weaker from the start. For example, if you have a desk job, you are most likely going to have weaker abdominal than if you were walking and standing all day. If you didn’t workout out much, or actively try to strengthen your abs, this is probably the case. Posture is HUGE in the healing process after pregnancy, which we go over in the program.
How long should I wait to exercise after pregnancy?
I advise waiting for at least four months before returning to higher intensity exercise. This is because the levator hiatus (the gap in your pelvic floor muscle through which your vaginal travels) widens during pregnancy. And it significantly widens after vaginal delivery (uhh – duh!).
