In order to determine which states have the biggest drug problems, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia in three overall categories: 1) Drug Use & Addiction, 2) Law Enforcement and 3) Drug Health Issues & Rehab.

Drug Health Issues & Rehab – Total Points: 25

Share of Adults Who Couldn’t Get Treatment for Illicit Drug Use in the Past Year: Triple Weight (~7.50 Points) Note: This metric measures the share of adults who needed but didn’t receive treatment for illicit drug use in the past year.

Alabama

Marijuana is the main drug associated with drug treatment admissions in the state. Cocaine and opiates (like prescription drugs) follow next in line.

Arizona

Sadly, in Arizona, the rate of drug-induced deaths is higher than the entire national average. Between the years of 2007 and 2008, Arizona made the list of the top 10 states in terms of rate of drug use, besides marijuana, among adults of ages 18 to 25.

Arkansas

Marijuana, followed closely by stimulants like methamphetamines, is also the most common drug people abuse and are addicted to in Arkansas.

California

In this west coast locale, 36% of voluntary admissions to drug treatment facilities were for stimulants (like methamphetamines) and 25% were for marijuana.

Colorado

Marijuana is the number one drug involved in drug treatment admissions in the state.

Connecticut

Connecticut finds itself on the list of top 10 states for dependence on illicit drugs among young adults between the ages of 18 and 25. Heroin tops the list for the most common drug leading to drug treatment admissions.

Hawaii

Marijuana, then stimulants, are the most commonly used drugs and the drugs most involved in treatment programs in Hawaii.

An overall ranking 1-13 indicates lower prevalence of mental illness and higher rates of access to care. An overall ranking 39-51 indicates higher prevalence of mental illness and lower rates of access to care. The combined scores of all 15 measures make up the overall ranking.
