Anyone have a trick for sanding a non-skid deck. Can't use regular DA sander or block sanding as these only hit the high spots. Was thinking of using a scoth-brite type pad. Any solutions would be gratly appreciated.

Joe...Give it a good wash with On and Off then hit it with Liquid Sander. The On and Off can be found at a marine store and the Liquid Sander at a hardware store. You need good ventilation using both products. A good paint to apply is Interlux Brightside polyurethane.Hard as nails.

Already did hull and gunwales with Awlgrip. Will be doing same on deck. Was a very easy task to paint, not to get ready for paint. Was worried about how to clean low areas of non-skid surface. Will take a look at your solution. Thanks for the help.

Joe, I'm very interested in your choice of Awl Grip and your experiences in applying it. Did you do the job itself or did a yard do the job?

Glen Williams Well-Known Member

Wash with a strong degreaser or Dawn dish detergent and scotch brite pad. Do this twice. Then after it dries, just before you paint it, wipe it down with acetone, let it dry, and I suggest using sterling or awlgrip paint and non skid compound. This can be applied with a brush or roller but MUST be continually mixed.

Good tip to go both ways when rolling/brushing on the imprinted non-skid. I also agree with you that you must add some non-skid material even if you have the imprinted non-skid. I have a buddy that didn't add the non-skid and the deck is slippery even though he had the imprinted non-skid.

cloud9 Well-Known Member

Lep, I awlgripped my 20' shamrock cuddy and didn't do half the work that Joekerins did. You don't have to do all that cleaning. Just remove whatever hardware you don't feel like masking off. For the hull, just wet sand with 220 grit followed by 320. Then wash down with soap & water and let dry.
