How to use crutches?

Before using crutches, it is important to be instructed by a healthcare professional as to how to properly use them. This should include proper crutch positioning and sizing. Proper crutch fitting is important for safe crutch use as well as to prevent possible nerve damage in your arms or hands. Here are some simple but very useful tips: 1 When standing up straight, the top of your crutches should be about 1-2 inches below your armpits. 2 The handgrips of the crutches should be even with the top of your hip line. 3 Your elbows should be slightly bent when you hold the hand grips. 4 To avoid damage to the nerves and blood vessels in your armpit, your weight should rest on your hands, not on the underarm supports.

How to use crutches for a leg injury?

Lean forward slightly and put your crutches about one foot in front of you. Begin your step as if you were going to use the injured foot or leg but, instead, shift your weight to the crutches. Through word of mouth, he received a recommendation for a local rehabilitation facility a week or so after he was discharged from the hospital and called for the first available date, at which point he was informed there was a waiting list lasting about five weeks. He put his name on the list, but he still has never received a call about making an appointment.
