how to convince voc rehab to let me buy my own computer for school?

Voc Rehab PC & Laptop

I was asked a question by a fellow veteran but did not know how to respond.

Net books are worthless

Unless your just doing an english, history or some major like that, Netbooks are worthless. You will not be able to do fast computations or programming and the videos will lag. Not only that but your going to strain you eyes looking at a 10 inch monitor hours on end. Voc rehab should and will pay for a decent computer.

Voc Rehab: Computer

Hey guys, I absolutely love these forums because you all are the absolute best resource I've found for navigating my benefits! Important stuff is in bold.

Stubborn VRC

This is my first time posting to this website, I didn't want to bump a really old thread and I didn't want to start a new one as there are several threads about trying to convince your counselor to get you a MacBook. I have a situation and I'm hoping I could get some help.

lap top thru voc rehab

why is voc rehab being stingy and not getting your pc????? tell them that you want out and get a PASS counselor ssi pays them an equal amount of your ssd or ssi payment ex, they opt to give you 4,000 a year#N#when ssi will give you 7,600 or more a yr thru the PASS program in cash every month on top of your benefit Voc Rehab is a scam ripping people off and taking your money from the Federal Gov because they#N#will get it thru the ticket to work program , thru maximus so they will get 7,500 or more and give you a disgruntled handout of your own damn money also PELL grants should cover almost all of your schooling#N#and leave you with some left over to help with books Especially if your in College.

A little update

Well... I tried and I'm getting a PC. It's not that big of a deal to me. I REALLY would like a Mac but I was told they will not buy one unless my degree is for graphic design or for some reason I specifically need it. I can understand that I guess.

I got a Dell PC and a Pixma MP800 Printer

Typically you are given a choice between HP and Dell for the Home PC... The VA only buys you the OLD big Monitor, however, after Voc Rehab puts your PC on order, through the mfgr of your choice, you can call them and ask for a flat screen, just pay the difference btwn the two costs.

How long did it take??

How long did it take to actually come in?? I have been waiting on my macbook pro since may. All my counselor keeps sending back is an email saying I will let you know when it comes in. I didn't have it for the Summer semester and now it is time for midterms in the Fall semester.

mac book

Ok so I got a list of things that I can get and a computer is not on there. In fact if I want a calculator that costs over 50 dollars I need to get special permission. How do you guys get your computers? I know that your program needs to require something if they are going to get you something expensive.

macbook

cale92008 I was told I just needed documentation from the school that the computer was something I needed. Like a letter from your advisor, or someone, or on your syllabus.

ch 31

Ok I figured I'm going to work on getting that lap top then. Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles is the school I'm applying to that use macs in all their labs, libraries etc. I'm just speculating that if I get accepted I'll need a personal mac computer to keep up with everything they teach in class.

Recent GAO Report

A recent Governmental Accountability Office (GAO) report addressing VA Voc Rehab concluded the program varied greatly in how counselors implement the program. The agency responded to the critique by promising to study the problem.

Internet Reimbursement Explained

Right now, I do not have a copy of this new policy the counselor is referencing regarding the required justifications. The policy that is public in the M28R addresses, generally:

Brother died of Covid this week

Just like the title says. My brother (my actual, biological brother, as well as a fellow veteran) died of Covid-19 at the age of 42, 3 days ago. Get the jab at the VA y'all. It's free, easy as fuck, and you've already been through enough without that shit too.

Here we go again

Really doesn’t have much do do with being a vet but I need to vent and the embarrassment from my current situation makes it easier to do to you guys than in person to someone. So, waking up on my parents couch this morning because the police were nice enough to bring me here instead of jail. Got my second dui last night. 1st was 2 years ago.

First VA Vocational Rehabilitation Meeting

First: Before that initial meeting, you (the disabled veteran) will need to prepare a basic case supporting what you want to do. Do not go in there with no idea of what you would like to do. It’s probably really annoying to the counselors, but more importantly, it makes you appear directionless.

What Voc Rehab Will Pay For

Second: VA Vocational Rehabilitation will pay for anything from vocational training to medical school. If you can “prove” there will be a job waiting for you when your program is over, and the program is from an “accredited” program (i.e., a university or similar), your Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor (VRC) will likely approve it.

How Much Voc Rehab Will Pay

Third: VA Vocational Rehabilitation will pay for many things ranging from startup costs to a law degree. The magic limit is $25,000 per year. If your rehabilitation plan is more than this, it will require additional approvals. As you can guess, getting additional approvals is very difficult to accomplish. Your “call-to-action” better be spot on.

Where You Can Go To College On Voc Rehab

Fourth: You can attend college anywhere, so long as you can support it with documentation. Things get sticky when disabled veterans want to get a four-year degree or graduate level training paid for. The counselor will balk at the idea of sending any disabled veteran to a private college or university.

Types Of Voc Rehab Training

Fifth: you can get college degrees in anything that would lead to a job somewhere. The obvious choice would be getting a degree in Business, Information Technology, Engineering, Accounting or something similar. These degrees give you specific job function type skill sets that most companies need.

GI Bill vs Voc Rehab

Sixth: should you use the Post 9/11 GI Bill or Chapter 31 Voc Rehab? Great question. I wrote a little blog post for Military.com on the subject. Voc Rehab recipients have been screwed by recent legislation.

What happens if a veteran does not complete the rehabilitation program?

With certain exceptions, if a Veteran does not complete the planned rehabilitation program, the Veteran must repay the value of the supplies that VA provided. The value of supplies authorized by VA will be repaid under the provisions of this section when a Veteran fails to complete the program as planned.

How many times does the VA provide non-consumable supplies?

VA will generally provide non-consumable supplies only one time , even though the same supplies may be required for use by the Veteran in another subject or in another quarter, semester, or school year. Examples of non-consumable supplies that VA will generally only provide one time include the following:

What is a VR&E officer?

memorandum to the RO Director through the VR&E Officer must be prepared for review and concurrence prior to authorizing the purchase of a firearm. The VR&E Officer is responsible for reviewing the entire CER folder, the current VA service-connected and nonservice-connected disability ratings, and any pending claims for disability. The VR&E Officer must use the checklist, Appendix AZ, Review Prior to Purchase of Firearms, to identify and address any issues that could warrant disapproval of the purchase. Examples of disability conditions which warrant sufficient documentation to resolve any doubt of the appropriateness of the handling of firearms includes neuropsychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia, major depression, and bipolar disorder; other mental health conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety disorder; and the involvement of substance abuse.

What is the VRC?

The VRC is responsible for an ongoing review of any circumstances that may interfere with the successful completion of the Veteran’s rehabilitation program, including any situation that may lead to the revocation of the registration to own or permit to use the firearm.

Does the VA provide protective clothing?

Protective articles or uniforms will be provided at VA expense, when the facility requires similarly circumstanced non-Veterans to also use these types of clothing. VA must not provide any other types of clothing (38 CFR 21.219

Does VR&E pay for computer maintenance?

While the Veteran is in a rehabilitation program, VR&E must arrange for maintenance of computer or special equipment. VR&E may pay for upgrades to the computer or special equipment for the Veteran’s program or to make the Veteran competitive in the employment market.

What is the role of VR&E?

As stewards of taxpayers' money, VR&E staff are responsible for and held accountable for the appropriate authorization and processing of fiscal transactions. The VRC must ensure correct application of the laws and regulations concerning all fiscal transactions. Fiscal oversight provided within the VR&E Division ensures that the VRC authorizes and processes fiscal transactions with accountability, honesty and good judgment.
